| Description: |
Be prepared for lots of sun on this hike and a few swimming holes. The hike itself is only a couple of miles each way, much of it over granite.
Many people will continue past the lower waterfall, and heading up will pass the upper section of the waterfall and reach Avalanche Lake. From here it is very simple to reach numerous other lakes in Desolation Wilderness area, including Ropi Lake, Lake of the Woods, Lake Aloha, etc. |

From Placerville, drive east on Hwy 50 about 42 miles through Strawberry to Twin Bridges. From Lake Tahoe, drive west on Hwy 50 to Twin Bridges 7 miles west of Echo Summit. The parking lot is on the north side of Hwy 50 just west of the Pyramid Creek bridge.
Wilderness permits are needed to hike in this area. Day users can usually get them at the trailhead. Overnighters must get them elsewhere. |
