Round-trip mileage: 4.2 - 6.0 miles
Difficulty: 2 ( 1=Easy,2=Moderate,3=Strenuous )
Description:
This is actually a fairly easy hike requiring some ability to follow trails across granite, eg. follow the ducks. You will spend a lot of time in the sun on this hike, but the reward is worth it. (Warning: This is a very popular trail.) Grouse lake is quite beautiful, but I consider Smith Lake the crowning jewel of this hike. Many people stop and turn around at Grouse. Less people at Smith is fine by me.
Directions:
From Placerville, drive east 36 miles on Hwy 50 and make a left turn on Wright's Lake Rd. From Lake Tahoe, drive west on Hwy 50 to Echo summit. Continue 8 miles and turn right on Wright's Lake Rd.
Wilderness permits are needed to hike in this area. Day users can usually get them at the Wright's Lake kiosk or trailhead. Overnighters must get them elsewhere.
When you reach Wright's Lake, turn right just past the kiosk and continue around the lake to the trailhead at the end of the road.
