Round-trip mileage: 5 miles
Difficulty: 1 ( 1=Easy,2=Moderate,3=Strenuous )
Description:
This hike, in Spenceville Wildlife Area, leads to a great swim under a 60-foot waterfall. The pool under the falls is good-sized with plenty of depth and room for diving. The temperature is even quite nice in August & September. Any earlier might be too much for some. A bit downstream from this falls is another about 30 feet high. A third falls is a little farther downstream on a side creek. This one dries up fairly early.

Directions:
From Marysville, drive east on Hwy 20 about 20 miles to Smartville and turn right (south) on Smartville Rd. From Grass Valley, drive west on Hwy 20 about 15 miles to Smartville and turn left (south) on Smartville Rd. Drive 4.5 miles and bear left on Waldo Rd (a dirt/gravel road). Drive 2.1 miles and turn left on Spenceville Rd (another dirt/gravel). Drive about 2 miles to the end of the road and park.
Another route comes from the South. Hwy 65 runs from Roseville to Marysville. Take Hwy 65 from Roseville to the small town of Sheridan (about 21 miles from Roseville). Turn right (North) on Riosa Rd and then the first left on Camp Far West Rd. After 7.5 miles, you will reach a "T" at the lake. Turn left and cross the dam and a bridge. Take the first right after the bridge and follow that 5.6 miles to the Spenceville Rd. Once you pass the lake, this road becomes a dirt road and "washboard" is a good description. At Spenceville Rd, turn right and go to the end of the road and park. From this route, the total miles on the dirt portion of the road is about 6 miles. |
