THUNDER MTN
Round-trip mileage: 7.2 miles
Difficulty: 2 ( 1=Easy,2=Moderate,3=Strenuous )
Description:
This hike will take you to the highest point in Amador County. Or at least it can if you are willing to wander a bit off-trail. The trail itself takes you 3.6 miles with an elevation gain of about 1800 feet to the WRONG summit. This summit is actually two feet shorter than the real summit.
Directions:
From the East, take Hwy 89 to Hwy 88 and head west. The trailhead will be on the left about two miles past Kirkwood.

From the North, take Hwy 50 to the Sly Park Reservoir turnoff in Pollock Pines. After passing Sly Park Reservoir(Jenkinson Lake), cross the dam and continue on Iron Mtn Rd (AKA Mormon Emigrant Trail). NOTE: This road is not maintained during Winter. Turn left on Hwy 88 wher you meet up with the route from the West.

From the West, or from the North, get to Jackson via Hwy 88 from Stockton or Hwy 49 from Placerville or Hwy 16 to Hwy 49 from Sacramento. Take Hwy 88 towards Silver Lake. Approximately 44 miles will get you to the junction with Iron Mtn Rd. Continue on Hwy 88 for 8.7 miles to Silver Lake. From here it is approximately 3.3 miles to the trailhead on your right. It can be hard to find. If you reach Kirkwood, you went 2 miles too far.
